On Monday, April 27, 2015, Alcorn State University Athletic Director Derek Horne announced that Montez Robinson would be the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the University.

For the past four years Robinson was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. While there, the Wildcats advanced to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament quarterfinals twice with a trip to the championship game in 2012. Prior to Bethune Cookman, Robinson spent six years at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia as an assistant men’s basketball coach. During his tenure with the Owls he helped the program transition from Division II to Division I.

Athletic Director Horne wrote in a statement, “Robinson is an experienced recruiter and developer of dynamic talent. Combine all of that with his commitment to academic achievement and we have a coach who is a good fit to develop a first-rate basketball program.”

Robinson replaces Luther Riley because the University decided not to renew his contract at the end of the season.
Robinson stated, “It’s extremely exciting to become the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Alcorn State University where knowledge and character is the emphasis both on the court and in the classroom. Alcorn has an impressive vision for the basketball program and I am looking forward to building a foundation of success. I cannot wait to start working with current players and incoming freshmen.”

Robinson will replace Luther Riley, who left Alcorn State in the middle of the season
