Back 2 SWAC Week on the Reservation

Alcorn’s Student Government Association hosted Back 2 SWAC Week from September 14, 2015 to September 19, 2015. The week was implemented to give the students a thrilling week leading up to the first SWAC home game.

The week of festivities began on Monday, September 14, 2015 with a Pajama Jam in the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium (Old Gym). The students were dressed in their pajamas while they enjoyed the night of entertainment by DJ T-Money and the Money Team. The event lasted from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the gym was filled with energetic students filled with Alcorn pride. Adrian McLain, the SGA President, stated, “I did not expect such a huge crowd for the first night of the week but it was a great way to start the week.”

Tuesday, September 15, 2015 was Fun in the Sun. It was set up behind the Amenities’ Building from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There were basketball tournaments, miniature bowling, sac racing, tug-a-war, and many other activities on sight. Many students participated in the different games at the event. Candace Cooley, a sophomore from Heidelberg, MS said, “I enjoyed defeating my peers in the different games we played, it was tons of fun.”

There was an intense dodge ball tournament on Wednesday, September 16, 2015. The freshmen played against the juniors and the sophomores played against the seniors. There were 10 people on a team and the sophomores and seniors played in a championship game because they were the winners in the tournament but due to the seniors’ experience they were the overall champions. DJ T-Money also played thrilling music while the tournament was being played. Students were in attendance to cheer their classmates on.

On Thursday, September 17, 2015 the student’s courage was tested. The scary movie, Annabelle was shown at Movie Night. The show started promptly at 7:00 p.m. It was held in the TV Room of the James L. Bolden Campus Union. The SGA had a concession stand where they sold nachos and funnel cakes. All proceeds were for the SGA budget.

On Friday, September 18, 2015 the students where amped with their school spirit as they wore purple and gold all day and attended the Gym Jam that night. They Gym Jam began at 7 p.m. in the Old Gym. The students were entertained by the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite, Golden Girls, and the ASU cheerleaders. The dynamic sounds from the band had the students pumped and ready to party. Once the pep rally was over, the students enjoyed sounds by DJ T-Money once again and they danced the night away.

Back 2 SWAC Week ended with the first home football game where Alcorn played Mississippi Valley State University and defeated them 55-13. Saturday, September 19, 2015 was Family and Friends Day and Spinks-Casem Stadium was filled with Braves’ fans. Back 2 SWAC Week was a success and the Student Government Association is constantly planning events for the University and they want all Braves to stay tuned for what else they have in store for the remaining of the academic semester.
