On August 19, Director of Athletics Derek Horne announced the hiring of Brett Richardson as one of the newest additions to the Alcorn State University family by appointing him the new head baseball coach.  A Tallahassee, Florida native, Richardson sports an impressive resume highlighted by his 19 years as an assistant baseball coach for the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Rattlers.

Director of Athletics Horne stated, “Coach Richardson brings a wealth of knowledge to share with our student-athletes. We look forward to him stepping in and shaping the baseball team into a competitive program.”

Richardson is no stranger to success. He played catcher with the Rattlers in the early 1990s and was a member of three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships in 1990, 1991, and 1992.

His first taste as an assistant head coach came in the form of a 5 year stint with Tallahassee Lincoln High School from 1992-1997. In August of 1998 Richardson returned to FAMU as a graduate assistant to begin his collegiate coaching career. Hard work payed off eventually for Richardson because he was promoted to full time status in 2000 as a recruiting coordinator and pitching coach.

Richardson’s dedication and devotion did not go unnoticed by the FAMU Administration because in May of 2010 he was granted the title of Interim Head Baseball Coach.  With the promotion he did not rest on his laurels because under his leadership the Rattlers went to their first MEAC Tournament appearance.  In June of 2013 the FAMU Administration hired Jamey Shouppe as the new head baseball coach but due to Richardson’s extensive resume Coach Shouppe kept him on as the Rattler’s assistant baseball coach.

Richardson attained both his Bachelors degree in Health and Physical Education in 1997 and his Masters degree in Education (Sports and Leisure Management) in 2001  from Florida A&M University.
