On Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 6:00 pm the Alcorn State Braves (1-2, 1-2) took on the Grambling State Tigers (2-0, 2-1) at Eddie Robinson Stadium in Grambling, Louisiana in a rematch of the 2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship game.

Grambling scored first in the first quarter at the 7:07 mark when quarterback Devante Kincade threw a 17 yard strike to tail back Martez Carter and with the extra point from kicker/punter Jonathan Wallace the score was 7-0, Tigers. The Braves got a lucky break at the 2:35 mark when a high snap from Grambling’s center ended up in Grambling’s end zone and the Tigers recovered giving the Braves a 2 point safety making the score 7-2, Tigers. The Braves scored yet again with 4 seconds left in the quarter when quarterback Noah Johnson hit wide receiver LaDarrien Davis with a 10 yard pass. The extra point by Corey McCullough was no good therefore making the score 8-7, Braves.

The second quarter was dominated by the G-Men of Grambling. The Tigers scored at the 13:21 mark with a safety making the score 9-8, Tigers. Grambling scored again at the 3:38 mark when Kincaid hit tight end Jordan Jones with a 7 yard pass and with a Wallace extra point the score was now 16-8, Tigers.

Alcorn came out of the half and struck first in the third quarter at the 8:45 mark when kicker Haiden McCraney hit a 46 yard field goal to make the score 16-11, Tigers. The Tigers, not to be outdone, scored at the 5:44 mark when Kincade threw a 20 yard missile to wide receiver Verlan Hunter and with the Wallace extra point being good the score was now 23-11, Tigers. The G-Men continued to pour it on when Kincaide scored on a 7 yard run at the 3:36 mark but with a Wallace failed extra point attempt the score was now 29-11, Tigers.

The fourth quarter was more of the same for Grambling as they kept up their offensive onslaught. At the 8:28 mark wide receiver Chad Williams caught a 67 yard bomb from Kincade and with yet another successful point after attempt by Wallace the score was now 36-11, Tigers. The Braves finally awakened at the 8:08 mark when wide receiver Marquis Warford scored on an 87 yard kickoff return and with a McCraney extra point the score was now 36-18, Tigers. To add insult to injury the G-Men scored another touchdown at the 6:07 mark when Kincade threw a perfect spiral to Carter for a 47 yard reception and with a Wallace point after attempt the final score was 43-18, Tigers.

The Braves must reevaluate and regroup quickly because their opponent does not get any easier next week. The Braves take on the 20th ranked Arkansas Razerbacks of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) on October 1, 2016 at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Arkansas at 11:00 am.
