Due to a four hour lightning delay, the scheduled match up on Saturday, October 5th at 2:00 pm between the Alcorn State University Braves (4-2, 3-0) and the Alabama State University Hornets (2-3, 1-1) didn’t take place until 6:00 pm at Hornet’s Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama but once it did the Braves looked like a scoring machine.

Alcorn didn’t waste much time putting points on the board in the first quarter when at the 12:30 mark Wide Receiver LeCharles Pringle caught an 8 yard pass from Quarterback Felix Harper and with a successful extra point from Kicker Corey McCullough the score was 7-0, Braves. Alcorn continued to find the end zone when at the 4:47 mark Harper scampered into the end zone on an 18 yard run and with a McCullough PAT (point after attempt) the score was now 14-0, Braves.

The Mighty Braves continued their dominance in the second quarter when at the 5:51 mark Harper connected with Tight End Nigel Wood on an 18 yard pass and with a McCullough extra point the score was now 21-0, Braves. Alcorn looked like a team destined to make a return trip to the Celebration Bowl in December. With only 2 minutes and 6 seconds elapsing from their last score Running Back Niko Duffy broke loose on a 67 yard touchdown run and with a McCullough extra point the score at halftime was 28-0, Braves.

After the intermission, the Hornets decided to contribute some points in the third quarter at the 11:06 mark when Wide Receiver Michael Jefferson caught a 29 yard pass from Quarterback KHA’Darris Davis and with an extra point by Kicker Hunter Hanson the score was now 28-7, Braves.

Alcorn was on cruise control in the fourth quarter and scored at the 9:54 mark when Wide Receiver Raidarious Anderson caught a 22 yard pass from Harper and with a McCullough PAT the final score of the game was 35-7, Braves.

Quarterback Felix Harper had yet another phenomenal game with 10 completions for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Niko Duffy stood out among the Running Backs with 101 rushing yards and 1 touchdown and LeCharles Pringle had 57 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. The Defense was led by Defensive Back Juwan Taylor, and Linebackers Nichel Herron and Malik Holbert with 6 solo tackles each.

The Braves’ next contest will be their Homecoming when they take on Division II’s Savannah State University Tigers (3-2, 2-0) in Spinks-Casem Stadium on Saturday, October 12th at 2:00 pm.
