Brian Johnson takes over as new Head Track & Field Coach

On August 22, Alcorn’s Athletic Director Derek Horne announced that Brian Johnson was the new Head Track and Field Coach. Johnsons’ accolades range from being a former National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Champion to an Olympian.

Johnson,  a native of Iowa, LA, began his coaching career at his alma mater Southern University in Baton Rouge as an assistant in 2003. Progressing through the ranks, he was appointed Head Track and Field coach in August of 2010. Johnson, being able to handle multiple tasks at once, coached Southern’s men and women’s teams to a second place finish in the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Outdoor Championships. After his departure from Southern University Johnson became an assistant track coach for the University of Georgia for the 2014-2015 season.

As an undergraduate at Southern University Johnson was no slouch himself finishing third in the long jump in the 2001 and 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships and finishing fifth in the 100 meter dash at the 2002 Outdoor Nationals held in Baton Rouge, LA.

In 2003 Johnson won the NCAA Indoor Championship in the long jump by traveling 27 feet, 2 inches. Not to be outdone, in 2008 Johnson took 2nd place in the long jump at the Olympic Trials and was a representative for Team USA in the Olympic Games in Beijing where he finished 22nd.

Johnson received his Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science  in May of 2003.
