On Thursday, November 7th, at 6:00 pm, the English Department hosted a Poetry Slam Night in the Math and Science Building in Room 109. The event was for students to come and release their emotions through poetry. A $1 entry fee was required to participate which covered the hot chocolate and refreshments.

Before the event began, the Department inducted six new members into the English Club which were Na’keia Stewart, Victoria Montgomery, Malik Camp, Sherman Bell, Zy’Mira Thompson, and Crenisha Hayes.

Students were first told to pick a word out of a cup, not knowing what that word could be or what they would be doing with it. After picking a word, the students were supposed to either act out or create a spoken word centered around that chosen word. There were three rounds of poetry, after which the judges, Sheri Wallace and Heather Bailey, would choose a winner. The contestants were judged on their performance, flow of the words, and the emotion transmitted through their words or skits.

Cierra Powell, Lois Winn, Thailand Rogers and Isma’il Zafir Shuaib were amongst some of the contestants that participated in the Slam. In the end, Mass Communications major from Memphis, Tennessee, Jordan Lampley captured the judge’s ear with his spoken word and won a $20 Visa gift card.

Jasmine Stevenson is a Broadcast/Mass Communications major from Vicksburg, Mississippi. She will be a contributor for The Campus Chronicle for the 2019-2020 school year.
