The Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Phi Chapter, hosted several events during the month of February to promote the importance of Heart Health. Through events such as AKArobics and Jump Rope for Heart, the Chapter wanted to ensure that Alcorn State University (ASU) students remain active and aware of their health.

AKArobics is a series of workout days geared towards encouraging ASU students to remain fit and remember the importance of being active year round. AKArobics was held at different locations across the campus including, the Union Multipurpose Room and the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium (Old Gym) from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm. Each day included a different workout such as, February 5: Yoga, February 7: Line Dance, February 12: Pretty PHit, and concluding on February 21: 5,6,7,8 in collaboration with Alcorn’s Cheerleaders. After completing each workout, participants were provided with drinking water or healthy smoothies.

Makayla Wiley, Vice-President of the Gamma Phi Chapter, explained why this event is helpful for college students by stating, “The AKArobics series was created as a tool for students to come out and get their hearts pumping. In today’s world where we are seeing an increase of diseases like hypertension and obesity affecting young people, it is vital that we take the necessary precautions to prevent these diseases from occurring. The series was once a week for four weeks. The goal was to incorporate fun while getting in shape. By doing this, we are promoting a happy and healthy lifestyle.”

The Ladies also hosted a Wellness Wednesday: Jump Rope for Heart event on February 27th from 6:08 pm – 7:08 pm at the Old Gymnasium. During the event, participants pumped their hearts through numerous cardio workouts. The event educated participants on simple ways to work out and remain active without technical equipment.
