The 71st Emmys’ Red Carpet was set on fire at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California Sunday, September 22. Celebrities showed up and showed out with various designer looks. Some celebs who graced the carpet went with vibrant colors that really stood out in the crowd while others did not do as well in the style department.

Lavern Cox stole the show. Cox was stunning in lavender ruffles with a one-shoulder embellishment. The trans actor used her moment in the spotlight to support Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) rights, carrying a custom Edie Parker clutch that raised awareness about an upcoming Supreme Court hearing. The clutch featured the transgender community’s flag on one side and the LGBTQ rainbow on the other, with lettering that read, “Oct 8, Title VII, Supreme Court.” October 8 is the date when the Supreme Court will hear a case about whether LGBTQ workers are protected by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Billy Porter is another star that did not disappoint. The Pose star shined in a custom, Disco-inspired look by Michael Kors with a custom hat by British designer Stephen Jones. He completed the look with a bejeweled pinstripe suit, extra-long scarf as a tie, and platform shoes. It’s only the beginning of “Red Carpet season” but Porter is one to look out for style wise.

Moving on to some of the worst dressed, James Van Der Beek looked horrible in his crushed velvet suit. The peach color did not compliment his skin either. It is always a nice surprise when men try to step out of the box when it comes to black tie events but this simply went in the wrong direction. Dascha Polanco also was a miss with her bubblegum pink gown. The bows on the arms were overwhelming and she did not look comfortable at all. You can’t let the dress wear you, you have to wear the dress.

There were a few other misses on this year’s Emmys’ carpet. Many featured attempts of gold ensembles that was just absolutely wrong. Julia Louis-Dreyfus looked rather plain in her gold gown and Kathryn Newton nearly blinded the audience in her gold suit dress combination. Natasha Lyonne had a bit too much gold going on with her look while Amy Poehler’s gold pantsuit was underwhelming and gave off the vibe that she put in no effort. It’s safe to say that gold just wasn’t a winner this year.

The overall best dressed at the Emmys had to have been Zendaya. She gave the Red Carpet Poison Ivy vibes in her custom Vera Wang gown. The gown was a one-shoulder dress that featured a sweetheart neckline with a sheer bodice, accompanied with a one-sided thigh-high slit. Her fiery red/auburn hair really pulled the entire look together. She is someone to watch during this year’s Red Carpet season as well because she and her stylist Law Roach, seem to be coming for our necks.
